At the beginning of 'Inception', Nolan shocks the audience with a simple image that raises so many questions. We see a man laying down in the water. Is he dead? Is he sleeping? What happened to him? We have no clue what happened to him but something is clear, the contrast between his beat-up face against that beautiful water, blown away by the sunshine, gives the scene a peaceful and dream-like feeling.  Now, this image appears and suggests that there should be a connection between the main character and the kids. However, is odd that we can't see the kids faces, showing their back to the man. They seem to be in the same physical space but psychologically they belong to a different space and time.

Dream or reality?

Dreaming has always been a mysterious phenomenon that we not only experience when we are sleeping but also when we are awake. What is it about dreams that sometimes we want them to become our reality? Is it the feeling of freedom, when we can be anyone and do anything in our mind? Suddenly, something that might be impossible in real life, becomes so easy to reach in our dreams. According to  Holly Lebowitz in her article The Spiritual Life of Dreams: " Dreams capture the creative imagination because they represent just that -- the creative side of our psyches that is unfettered by such pesky constraints as gravity, time and space." Those constraints are certainly part of the distinctive clues that Christopher Nolan used in his acclaimed movie "Inception" to show the audience the fine line that could exist between a dream and reality.
